Sham marriages scam uncovered in Alicante

Four people have been taken into custody

Alicante police have arrested four people for a sham marriages fraud to secure Spanish nationality for foreigners. El País reports
this Wednesday that the network charged up to 4,000 € for the fake certificates.

Police began their investigations on discovering a number of fake certificates which had been registered at the Alicante Civil
Registry for supposed marriages between Spanish women and men from India.

The first suspect taken into custody was a woman who was arrested in Elda last month, who detectives discovered had been
paid 3,000 € for her sham marriage in 2006. The man who obtained Spanish nationality using his fake certificate was later located in Madrid.

Another man was arrested in Ibiza, and a woman in Elda who had received 4,000 € for her supposed wedding with a foreign national.
